Over two decades alliance with MS(S), celebrated at NUS’s historic 120th Anniversary

Hi-Tech Instruments was proud to showcase a series of events jointly organised or collaborating with the Microscopy Society of (Singapore), MS(S) while celebrating excellence in advanced imaging and strengthening regional collaborations in the microscopy community - a continuation of our over two decades of alliance with MS(S).

Neuroscience & Cell Biology Symposium and Anatomy Gala
On June 30, 2025, the Department of Anatomy at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), successfully hosted a prestigious Neuroscience & Cell Biology Symposium. The event was followed by an Anatomy Gala Evening, a grand celebration honouring a legacy of medical education and research excellence, and marking the historic 120th anniversary of NUS.

As a Platinum Sponsor, Hi-Tech Instruments contributed a technical presentation titled: "Colocalized Fluorescence and Sub-Micron IR Spectroscopy (O-PTIR) of Cells," which showcased the transformative power of Optical Photothermal Infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy.

What is O-PTIR? This groundbreaking technique breaks the diffraction limit of conventional infrared microscopy, enabling sub-micron chemical analysis of biological samples. For cell biologists, this means the ability to:

The Legacy of MS(S)
Since its founding, the MS(S) has played a pivotal role in advancing microscopy research, education, and collaboration within Singapore and across the region. Through conferences, training workshops, and regional partnerships, MS(S) has fostered a strong and connected microscopy community, contributing significantly to the growth of materials science, life sciences, and nanotechnology in Southeast Asia.

Under the dynamic leadership of its former President, Assoc Prof Dr. Samuel S.W. Tay, the MS(S) saw unprecedented growth. His efforts fostered robust participation from ASEAN countries and strengthened the society's publications, especially the vibrant "Annal of Microscopy."

Assoc. Prof. Samuel Tay, as former President, provided visionary leadership that strengthened MS(S)’s foundation and outreach, fostering scientific excellence and community engagement. Building on this legacy, Prof. Ong Wei Yi, the current President, has expanded MS(S)’s regional and international collaborations, further enhancing its role as a leading microscopy society in Southeast Asia.

Launching event: The Future of Topmost Surface Observation - Cold FE-SEM
Over the years, various launch events for new imaging technologies have been jointly organised with the MS(S), particularly during the presidency of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samuel Tay. One notable event was hosted by Hi-Tech Instruments — the launch of the Hitachi Ultrahigh Resolution Cold Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (Cold FE-SEM) at our Head Office.

The event was supported and co-organised by MS(S) alongside other regional microscopy societies. It brought together leading electron microscopists from Singapore and Malaysia to witness the next leap in extreme surface sensitivity — enabled by core innovations such as the cold field emission source, in-column ExB energy filter, and Super ExB pure signal detection (SE, LA-BSE, HA-BSE) with sub-eV secondary electron selectivity.

The Cold FE-SEM delivers:
  • Unrivalled Surface Resolution: The cold field emission source provides exceptionally stable, high-current, low-energy beams for topmost surface imaging with minimal damage, revealing ultra-fine details invisible to other SEMs.
  • Advanced Analytical Capabilities: It offers superior performance for high-resolution imaging and precise elemental analysis, even at low accelerating voltages, making it ideal for sensitive samples in life sciences, materials science, semiconductor and nanotechnology.
In recognition of all involved party supports, Mr. Tay Khoon Yang, Managing Director of Hi-Tech Instruments, presented memento of appreciation to Assoc Prof Dr. Samuel S.W. Tay.

Continuing to foster regional ties via ACSEAM and MS(S)….
The Association of China Southeast Asia Microscopy (ACSEAM) is a collaborative initiative bringing together ASEAN countries and China, with a shared focus on advancing microscopy and related technologies.

This regional partnership was further strengthened when Prof. Dr. Hing H.L., President of ACSEAM, presented a memento of appreciation to Prof. Ong Wei Yi, current President of MS(S). The gesture acknowledged MS(S)’s pivotal role in the formation of ACSEAM—an initiative that continues to deepen scientific ties and foster collaboration between ASEAN and China in the field of microscopy.

Hi-Tech Instruments is proud to be at the heart of these collaborative efforts, actively contributing by distributing cutting-edge technologies and sponsoring events organised by MS(S) and ACSEAM. Through these ongoing contributions, we remain committed to supporting the scientific community in Singapore and the broader ASEAN-China region, and to enabling the partnerships that drive innovation forward.
